About Judy Mastrangelo
I have painted all of my life, and explored many genres ~ from Realism, to Impressionism and Abstractionism. I portray a wide variety of subjects in my Art, but various forms of Fantasy have always been the closest to my heart. This includes Fairy Tales, Myths, and New Age.
I am a great lover of Nature, which seems alive to me. That is why I enjoy personifying all aspects of it, and this feeling is one of the reasons I am drawn to portraying the World of Fairies, Elves, Gods and Goddesses. It has always provided great inspiration for me, and a wonderful feeling of the Spirituality of all things. And so I often incorporate many aspects of Nature into my paintings. They may be from the grandest aspects, such as the Moon, Mountains and Forests, to Animals, Clouds, Rainbows, and tiny Mushrooms, etc.
I am happy to have had the opportunity to visit many gardens, in the US, and throughout Europe. They have always inspired me with their beauty, and I often add gardens to my paintings. They give me Peace and great Joy, which I hope to impart to others.
I live happily with my Soul Mate and Husband Michael, a true Renaissance Man, who is a great inspiration to me. We live in a timeless Land of old fashioned houses and gardens, on the edge of a Mystic Woods, with trees that Arthur Rackham would have loved to paint. We enjoy many things together, some of which are the Fine Arts, and walking through lovely Gardens. Even simple pleasures, such as feeding the little animals in our backyard, gives us much Happiness, and a great connection with the Beauty and Wonder of all Life.
I have always been inspired by great Artists throughout history, and regard them as my teachers. Some of my favorites are those of the Italian Renaissance, the Pre- Raphealites (I like John W. Waterhouse the most), and the Hudson River School of Landscape Painters. Maxfield Parrish is my favorite illustrator, and I feel that Sir Joseph Noel Paton is one of the greatest Fairy Artists. In my small way, I also enjoy continuing in the tradition of Beatrix Potter with her little animal people, and Cicely M. Barker with her lovely Flower Fairies.
I've taught Art, Modern Dance and Classical Ballet, and Drama to adults and children. I also created a Community Theater Group, presenting classical literature, including Fairy Tales and Shakespeare, on stage. At this time I have decided not to teach anymore, and to devote myself solely to my Art Work. I always have been fascinated with the gracefulness of dancers, and often ask them to be models for my paintings.
My Art has been licensed in many fields, such as for prints and posters, wall coverings, puzzles, calendars, greeting cards, figurines, etc. and I've illustrated several children's books. I daydream about my paintings for a while before putting them on canvas. This preliminary technique of "Mind Painting" helps me to develop an imaginative Work of Art.
