Your video conference background matters. Make the most of it.

That goes double for video podcasters and anyone who regularly posts videos to YouTube, Instagram (IGTV), Facebook and other social media outlets.

Video conferencing has been a business tool of telecommuters for several years now, but with millions of people working from home as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s more popular now than ever. So popular, in fact, that many video conference providers are offering free services for an extended period of time. These include, among others, Zoom, Cisco’s WebEx, Google Hangouts, Microsoft Teams and Microsoft’s Skype.

Working from home isn’t just for all of us regular folk trying to do our 9-to-5 jobs, even guests on the news, newscasters themselves and late night television show hosts are working from home and broadcasting from their home offices, and kitchens (even their bathrooms) to tens of millions of us.

While celebrities can get away with pretty much anything, your bosses, colleagues and clients may not appreciate a video conference with you soaking in the tub. Less terrible than bubbles, a cluttered or messy background will serve as a distraction (and likely topic of conversation among your co-workers after the call). You’re not a celebrity; you have to do better.

While we all hope and expect this current situation to resolve itself quickly so we can get back to life as normal, it’s likely that video conferencing and telecommuting will become even more entrenched in our work lives and become routine for millions more of us.

Video calls will likely permanently replace a large number of long distance / overnight sales calls and short visits to corporate headquarters on the other side of the country.

So, some helpful advice for the new normal:

Do yourself and the company you represent a favor and make sure you’ve got a professional looking background when you’re video conferencing.

You’ll certainly want to make sure that your video background is as polished as you are.

Who would you rather be doing business with? In a video conference, it’ll make a huge difference.

At a minimum, make sure it’s clean and tidy. Additionally, you may want to remove any items of a particularly personal nature. Crayon pictures done by your kids are fun and heartwarming, but might not convey the professional “I really am getting a lot of work done from home,” image you want to get across to your company or your customers.

If you’re a video podcaster, you’ll need to step things up a bit. After all, that video IS your service. So make the background something that will stand out and reinforce your brand.

Of course, not everyone is going to be working from home all of the time. Chances are good that a number of people on the video conference are at their desks or in a conference room or dedicated office space specifically equipped for video conferencing.

The trend today, after much experimentation with “open offices,” is to have dedicated spaces for video calls so co-workers are neither distracted nor distracting.

Charming condo hallway comes to life —

“Moving from Chicago to a vintage St. Paul, Minn., building, we wanted
a way to camouflage some ugly bi-fold doors while adding to the charm
of our condo, built at the turn of the last century. We narrowed our
search to Magic Murals’ historical prints, and finally chose a Chicago
World Exposition 1892 mural.

Not only does the artwork fit the
character of our space, it reminds us of the city we used to call
home.

How To Install Peel-and-Stick Wall Murals

Installing a self-adhesive, peel-and-stick wallpaper wall mural from Magic Murals is so easy, even our CEO can do it! ?

Seriously… in just an hour or so, depending upon how large your mural is, you can totally transform a wall in your home or business and make over the entire room in the process. While we’ve found that even folks with minimal DIY skills are able to easily install our Magic Murals, if you just don’t have the time, we can help you find an installer in your area. Please contact us here.

While this mural installation video will help with our self-adhesive materials, all of our murals ship with complete and easy-to-follow written instructions. You can download an extra copy here.

Prior to hanging your mural on the wall, make sure the wall is clean and dry. Wipe it down with a damp cloth and let it fully dry. If the wall has been recently painted, make sure it has had at least 14 days to completely cure and gas out. If it was painted with a low-VOC/stain resistant paint, we recommend wiping it down with a solution of isopropyl alcohol & water per the instructions that come with your mural. It’s one extra step in the process, but well worth it to ensure you’re 100% satisfied with the end result.

We recommend taking your mural out of the shipping tube and allowing it to lay flat for several hours prior to installation. While the mural is resting, you should measure it and the wall to ensure you’ve ordered the correct size. Note: there is a 3/4″ overlap on the seams where each panel of your mural meets. Take a moment to match up the panels while on the floor to prepare you better for the overlap when installing the mural.

As the video shows, the first step is to line up the first panel of the mural and affix it to the wall using 2″ wide masking tape at the top. This is the most critical step in the process. You’ll want to make sure this panel is straight and level… it it isn’t, the rest of the panels won’t be either. You’ll then create a “tape hinge” that will keep the panel in place while allowing you to peel off the first several inches of the backing paper from the top. This will expose the self-adhesive layer.

Use the felt squeegee (included) and starting from the center position, use outward horizontal strokes in each direction to apply the top portion of the mural panel. Slow and steady and with just enough pressure to remove wrinkles and air bubbles is the way to get this job done. Don’t rush it. If you do end up with a wrinkle or air bubble, gently lift the mural off of the surface just past the bubble and re-apply. Use the squeegee to re-adhere it, moving from the center of the panel, in each direction side to side, to the edges of the panel.

Once the top of the panel is successfully applied in a straight and level manner, reach behind the panel and pull down 12″ or so of the backing paper to expose the adhesive layer. Use the squeegee with horizontal strokes and continue to apply it to the wall. Slow and steady. Check your work to make sure there are no bubbles. It’s much easier to get them out now than it will be once the entire mural is installed. Repeat the process in 12″ increments until the first panel is installed.

After the first panel is applied, you’re ready for the second. Position the second panel on the wall so that the image lines up the correct way from top to bottom. Again, there’s a 3/4″ overlap at the seams, so be sure to account for that. Once the panel is all lined up, use masking tape to temporarily adhere the top of the mural to the wall on each side, just as you did with the first panel. Once again, you’ll create a “tape hinge” that will keep the panel in place while allowing you to peel off the first several inches of the backing paper. Then, repeat the squeegee-peel-squeegee-peel process until you’re finished.

It’s really quite easy.

ColorMe™ Murals at Library MakerSpaces

“Our kids love your ColorMe™ mural!!

That’s the heading of the subject line in the wonderful email we got from Barbara, Technology Services Manager at Delaware Valley Friends School in Paoli, PA.

She writes:

Last year, I purchased a “ColorMe” mural for my small school’s Makerspace. In case you don’t know what that is, a Makerspace is a place for students to create, ideate, and collaborate on and with hands-on projects that often mix traditional building and making materials, such as cardboard, wood, and Lego, with high-tech materials, like LEDs, circuits, robotics, and 3d printing.
Ours is a school for children who learn differently, and as such, many of our kids sometimes need a quiet place to decompress. While the Makerspace is often full of activity, I have dedicated a quiet room for our more introverted kids and installed a ColorMe mural. There is a big box of markers, crayons, and colored pencils for them to collaboratively color, and the kids love it!
They completed last year’s mandala. This year’s Whirligig will go up later in August and I expect they will love to color it just as much.
You know… we really don’t make much profit on the ColorMe™ murals (especially when you include the free shipping), but we LOVE selling them because they make people so happy. We get fan mail from families and co-workers and libraries and schools and… well, everyone who buys them. The adult coloring “craze,” shows no signs of slowing (so probably best to skip the “craze,” label). Coloring is a perfect way for kids and adults to disconnect from all of our electronic devices, spend some creative quiet time alone or with others, and just have fun.
And – yes – it’s a great way to introduce folks to all of our other wonderful murals and products. That’s really why we were the first printed mural company to introduce them; creating joy and happiness around the world is a very, very wonderful bonus.

Adult Coloring Murals for Fun & Fundraising

ColorMe™ Murals, murals you color yourself, are a great way to encourage creativity and collaboration.

We are so thrilled to have been part of this event. Craft brews, cocktails and coloring!!! What a great way for a library to bond with its community, raise some funds, work with local businesses, and blow off some steam.

Thanks to the Pottsboro Area Library of Pottsboro, Texas for letting us be part of it. They did all of the above with a great night bringing librarians, patrons and community leaders together for some fun and some fundraising.

Our ColorMe™ Murals have been a big hit with adults and children alike ever since we first introduced them (and we think we were the first… we’re always innovating over here at Magic Murals). Hundreds of schools and libraries have used them to bring their students together for a creative lesson in cooperation. Many have turned them into permanent table top wraps or displayed them afterwards. And many of them have gone on to buy them again and again.

We’ll note here, that for those of you without an unlimited budget, we can also create these with a dry erase / white board laminate that allows them to be used over and over again with dry erase markers.

Pretty great evening for our library. We had a Coloring & Cocktails event at a new distillery while jazz musicians (from One O’Clock Lab Band) played. Food truck for snacks. So easy to plan, and it created A LOT of buzz in the community. The event introduced us to many people who had no idea about what we do.

Why paint an accent wall when you could hang an awesome wallpaper wall mural?

Accent walls are a wonderful way to break up the white and beige paint that covers most of the walls in your home.
Wallpaper wall murals are a great way to create that accent wall. They not only add color, but add depth and texture and reflect your personality.

They go by many names, including focal walls and feature walls, but accent walls started trending more than a decade ago and most interior design gurus contend that they’re here to stay. In an article in ELLE DECOR, top designer Alison Davin even suggest that clients look beyond paint. “There are so many ways you can approach this trend, including “painting and papering,” according to Davin. But different textural options exist as well, such as exposed brick and wood paneling. There’s also removable wallpaper for renters or people afraid to commit.”

For apartment and house renters, that’s a great point to be made about removable wallpaper. Not only are materials like QuikStik™ and QuikStik PLUS™ removable, but they’re also reusable. You can easily take them down and reinstall them in your new home. And you needn’t worry about getting your security deposit back because it took the landlord 5 gallons of paint to cover that red wall you always wanted! 🙂

In that very same article, stylist Mariella Cruzado advises that,

“They’re great for small spaces. Accent walls are an ideal way to fake space in cramped quarters, especially when done in a deep hue.”

At Magic Murals, we couldn’t agree more… we just don’t think a deep hue is going to accomplish the kind of depth you want. It is, after all, just a two-dimensional dark wall. Go a step further, we advise. In fact, go several steps further… all the way out to the end of the pier, to the end of the horizon, all the way out into space if you want. When you create an accent wall with a mural that has a lot of depth to it, you’ll truly feel like you’ve added another room or even knocked out a wall.

One of the other great things about creating an accent wall with a wall mural rather than paint, of course, is that you can bring your personality and passions right into your home. So much more unique than a flat (pick your accent color) wall, right?

If you’re into surfing, bring the beach and waves inside. If you’re in the country but miss the city, put your favorite skyline across the wall. In the city but miss the country? Do the opposite and give yourself a forest, lake, mountain or farm scene. Can’t wait to get to the vineyards of Tuscany again? Bring those rolling Italian hills into your all American ranch home.

What color to choose?

Aside from your passion, you’ll also want to consider what particular accent color you want to choose for your wall. Kimberly Sayers Bartosch over at the spruce has some great advice for when you should go with warm versus cool colors. On color theory, Kimberly suggests,

“Warm colors—orange, yellow, and red—tend to pull the wall towards the eye, which makes a space appear smaller,” and “Cool colors—green, blue, and purple—tend to pull the wall away from the eye, which makes a small bedroom appear larger. By using a cool color on an end wall or side wall in a bedroom, you can make a small room appear larger, or make a skinny room appear wider.”

You might be thinking that color theory makes sense when painting, but how does it relate to choosing a mural?  Photographic murals are made up of so many different colors, after all.

Well… yes and no. And both answers lead us to believe that an accent wall created with a wall mural is far superior to one created with paint or even traditional repeating-pattern wallpaper.

Let’s say you want a blue wall. A perfect solution would be an image of the ocean (particularly the Caribbean) or the sky. Both types of images will give you a primarily blue wall, but with multiple shades and hues of blue and with added depth and texture. Perhaps you’re into green? Images of forests and grassy fields will give you plenty of green. A close up, macro-photography mural of a plant or banana leaf will bring in the green but with a modern art flair. It’s amazing how artistic Mother Nature is.

For those who want an accent wall that doesn’t add a burst of color (maybe you like the all-white look or all of the other walls are already painted a pretty color), there are a multitude of images in which white is the primary feature. In that same article, Kimberly also gives some great advice on furniture placement and how much or how little you should put up against that accent wall. She writes, “If the wall is (too) covered, then you will lose its dramatic impact. Finally, make sure not to leave an accent wall too bare, or you’ll have too much of a “pop” and the room will feel unbalanced.”

For those reasons, most people tend to create an accent wall behind their bed (wall murals make awesome headboards without taking up any valuable floor space) or their couch. But… and there’s always a but… we’ve also seen some of our customers do a great job by leaving their accent wall completely free of any furniture. One large wall with a scene that extends out to the horizon provides the dramatic effect of making it appear as if there were no wall at all. Talk about spacious living!
