From the artist: "The work of the great Edward Curtis is in the public domain. He provided an extraordinary chronicle of the last days of the unfettered lifestyle of the First Americans and immediate aftermath of the genocide. I don't pretend that I can improve upon his images, but I was asked to do some poster work for the local Indian Arts and Culture Festival here and so I took another serious look at some of his classic images. The wonderful model in this image was taken with a fairly cluttered background. With humility, I've edited and embellished his image. What I can do with my computer and montage techniques is to create a new picture combining his and my own elements to (hopefully) contribute something original. This rendering shows a saddled elder with an American flag around the neck of the horse: details which signal something around the turn of the century. I have added a bleached skull and a grassland vista to evoke the other holocaust of the era, the nearly complete extermination of the bison. It cannot be without the most profound grief that the former nomadic hunter has happened upon this reminder of the halcyon days of his people. He may imagine that the distant hawk embodies some talisman of hope." Painting and photography in the digital medium. © Chris Vest. Licensed by Out of the Blue
