Frequently Asked Questions

About Our Murals

What materials are your murals printed on?

We offer 3 choices of wall mural materials online for varying types of interior walls and have several special order options for masonry walls and exterior applications. Our exclusive QuikStik™, UltraStik™, and ProStik™ materials each feature a matte finish for extremely vibrant colors and reduced glare.

QuikStik™ is a heavy-duty movable and repositionable peel and stick vinyl compatible only with smooth painted surfaces. NOTE: Some modern wall paints can make self-adhesive (peel and stick) murals more challenging to adhere properly to the surface. Washable, durable, low-VOC and No-VOC paints may contain additives which can inhibit proper mural adhesion. We highly recommend preparing the surface in advance using a primer/sealer product like Zinsser® Gardz® by Rust-Oleum®, which can be found at most hardware stores, to prevent adhesion issues.

UltraStik™ is a 100% recyclable wallpaper that is pre-pasted with water activated adhesive for smooth painted surfaces and lightly textured walls.

ProStik™ is a Type II vinyl wallcovering with a non woven fabric backing (requires paste). All of our online materials are for indoor applications and are not recommended or rated for outdoor use. We encourage our customers to request material swatches for a first hand preview.

Is my mural reusable?
Yes, QuikStik™ (vinyl) is our peel and stick option that is removable and repositionable. QuikStik™ is for smooth surfaces only. Here is a link to our Compare Materials page for more details.
Do you offer any other material options?
We have a wide variety of other specialty materials available for interior and some exterior applications. Just email us or give us a call and we will be glad to recommend a material that meets your project requirements.
Can my mural be cleaned?
Yes. Use a damp cloth for cleaning the mural surface. No chemicals should be used on the mural surface as this could be harmful and cause damage to your wall mural.
Do you offer protective finishes?
Yes, you can select QuikStik™ with Matte Laminate as a material option for any product. This matte laminate is a film applied to the face of the mural after it has been printed and will add extra protection from chemicals and abrasion. The film provides a "maintenance friendly" layer that allows murals to be cleaned with solutions typically required more often in commercial settings such as medical facilities.
What sizes are available?
Our murals are available in almost any size you'd like but our standard sizes are small, medium and large based on the aspect ratio of each specific image. If you would like a custom sized mural there is no additional charge. Select "custom" under the size options and enter the desired height and width of the mural. This will activate our cropping tool which will allow you to make some adjustments prior to adding the image to your shopping cart.
Is there a minimum size?
Our minimum standard size is approximately 15 square feet. We specialize in professional large format decorative wall murals. However, we will gladly print custom sizes less than 15 square feet but prices will be calculated based on the 15 square foot minimum.
What if I measure incorrectly?
First, always be sure and double check measurements before placing an order! Depending on the measurement discrepancy, one option is to trim any excess material once the mural is installed. Accurate wall measurements are the customer's responsibility and are not included under Our 100% Guarantee. Full instructions to ensure measurements are accurate are available in our measurement instruction guide.
Do you offer murals printed in a grayscale or sepia tone finish?
Yes, you have the option on each product to choose Original Color, Grayscale or Sepia. A preview of the mural will be displayed with each option.

Installation and Removal

Will I be able to install my Magic Mural myself?
Magic Murals are "installation friendly" and very easy to install when following our detailed step-by-step instructions. An installation sheet is with your mural inside the package when you receive it. The instruction guides are also available to download from our website.
Do you have a mural installation video?

What type of wall surface do I need to have?
The surface of the wall is very important and critical to selecting a compatible material. Our QuikStik™ self-adhesive material is only compatible with smooth, painted wall surfaces. If you have an orange peel surface or another type of slightly textured wall, we recommend our ProStik Type II™ material. If you're trying to get creative and would like a mural on a surface that's a little unusual (concrete, masonry, etc.) just give us a call, and we will find an appropriate material for the job.
Wall Surface Compatibility

We strive to help you choose the right material for your wall mural project. Our products are designed to work on ideally prepared surfaces, preferably smooth walls with a high-quality paint and primer. While we do offer materials compatible with varying wall surface types, some paints may inhibit adhesion of a peel-and-stick products. There are endless combinations of wall paint and wall textures out there and we can’t test all of them. If you're unsure, we recommend ordering swatches of our materials to test adhesion prior to installation. If you believe your wall surface may be a problem, please consider our pasted products, UltraStik™ (pre-pasted) and ProStik™ (requires paste), for a more universally compatible installation or take the necessary steps to properly prepare your wall surface as described in detail below.

Modern Paint Formulations:

Some modern wall paints can make self-adhesive (peel and stick) murals more challenging to install. Washable, durable, low-VOC and No-VOC paints may contain additives which can inhibit proper mural adhesion. Proper cleaning and dry time of the wall surface with a mixture of isopropyl alcohol (70%) and water (30%) MAY significantly improve the adhesion. However, we highly recommend preparing the surface in advance using a primer/sealer product like Zinsser® Gardz® by Rust-Oleum®, which can be found at most hardware stores. Use this clear coat sealant to cover the area where the mural will be applied to the wall surface. Wait at least 24 hours (preferably longer) before installing the mural. If applying to newly painted walls, wait 10-14 days before installation. Unpainted drywall, or walls with inferior paint applications, may be problematic and need attention before beginning your mural installation. Contact Us if you have questions.

Wall Textures:

Many walls have been treated with an added decorative texture like orange peel, knockdown, stipple, etc. For these wall surface textures, it is crucial that they are properly prepared and the right mural material is chosen. If possible, consider smoothing out your wall texture with a skim-coating of drywall compound before priming and painting; this will give the ideal wall surface with few imperfections. If skim-coating is not an option, sand any rough areas and eliminate as many high spots and ridges as possible, and consider applying a primer/sealer product like Zinsser® Gardz® by Rust-Oleum®, which can be found at most hardware stores. Use this clear coat sealant to cover the area where the mural will be applied to the wall surface. Wait at least 24 hours (preferably longer) before installing the mural.

**We aim to address customer concerns such as these and provide suggestions for the best mural experience for our customers. Magic Murals cannot accept, refund or replace returned murals due to incompatible wall surfaces. Ultimately, it is the customer’s responsibility to install a mural according to its instructions and take the necessary steps to properly prepare the wall surface prior to installation.**

Can I install a mural in a bathroom or other high moisture area?
Most of our mural materials will perform well in higher-than-normal humidity areas, though we always recommend ordering a material swatch kit to test the material before placing your final order.
What materials do I need for installing my Magic Mural(s)?
You will need a measuring tape, masking tape (2" wide), scissors or utility knife, possibly a ladder and an assistant. We provide a felt squeegee application tool with every order.
Can you recommend someone to install my mural?
If you prefer to have your Magic Mural installed by a professional installer, we suggest searching for one in your area. The WIA (Wallcovering Installers Association) is a nation-wide network of certified wallcovering installers. Any of their members in your area should have no problem installing your mural. If no one from the WIA is available in your market, search for an independent wallpaper hanger in your area. If you are unable to locate an installer, feel free to contact us directly for assistance.
When it's time to redecorate, how do I remove my Magic Mural?
To remove QuikStik™ murals – starting with a top corner gently pull away from the wall at a 45 degree angle. To remove UltraStik™ murals – soak the wallpaper with a wet sponge and starting in the corner gently remove at a 45 degree angle. Use the wet sponge to remove any residue.
Will my mural damage my wall?
As long as the wall surface meets the requirements of no inferior, loose or peeling paint, removing the mural will not damage the wall surface. Proper paint surface is important for any mural installation and we recommend all surfaces be primed then painted before installing. Upon removal, UltraStik™ may leave a water soluble glue residue that can be removed with a wet sponge.

Uploading Images / Custom Murals

How do I upload my own image?
Our custom mural creator will allow you to upload any JPEG image you'd like for a mural. Our image analyzer will then let you know if it is of sufficient quality for a mural. If you have any difficulty or would like to use a different image format, please contact us for assistance, we'll be glad to help.
How do I make sure my image is high enough quality for a mural?
Wall murals require high-resolution imagery to print well and most modern professional digital cameras will provide a good quality image. iPhone and Android photos may not work well but we always recommend you select our "Submit for Review" option prior to ordering a custom image mural. If there are any issues we will contact you to discuss options. For more details, check out our Image Quality Guidelines.
What size picture works best for uploading? How many megapixels?
We recommend a minimum of a 12 megapixel image for printing most size murals. For extra large murals, larger megapixel files will be necessary so that the image output is not distorted and pixelated. For more details, check out our Image Quality Guidelines.
How do I upload artwork on paper or canvas?
There are two options: Option 1, take a digital photograph recommended with a minimum 12 megapixel camera at highest quality setting. Preview the photograph and enlarge the image on your screen to make sure that it meets your approval before uploading the image. Option 2, take the artwork to a photography store or location with scanning equipment to have the image scanned at a minimum of 600dpi resolution and saved in a digital format that can be uploaded.
Can my Custom Magic Mural be printed in Black-and-White (grayscale) or Sepia?
Yes, you have the option on each product (even your own!) to choose Original Color, Grayscale or Sepia. A preview of the mural will be displayed with each option.
