For a short period of time I lived in British Columbia, not far from Vancouver. The climate and surroundings could not have been more different from my prairie upbringing. Though the area boasts having the highest per capita horse population of anywhere in Canada, most of the horses near where I lived were stabled and blanketed and I saw more "horse crossing" signs that I did horses. In an effort to acclimatize myself to my new surroundings, for a while I painted maple leaves, flowers and scenic sunsets. But very quickly I felt the urge to get back to my rural roots. I spotted a group of horses in the pasture not far away, and waited for a sunny morning amidst the rain and fog typical of that region. When the sun finally popped out one September morning, my husband and I drove out early with our cameras to see if the horses were in the pasture. When we arrived the fog was so thick we cannot even see horses, so we waited. Slowly, as the sun rose higher, familiar shapes started to appear through the mist. My acrylic painting, "Rural Roots", is the result of that early morning excursion. © Adeline Halvorson. Represented by Rich Wiseman, LLC
