This beautiful Longhorn steer, born as Yankee Doodle Dandy on July 4th, enjoys the good life as a trophy steer as part of the bovine breeding program at the New Mexico Farm and Ranch Heritage Museum in Las Cruces, NM. Longhorns are special because they naturally evolved from the Corriente cattle left in the Southwestern part of the U.S. by the Spanish almost 500 years ago. The Longhorn breed was shaped by nature as they adapted to the environment without the help of man. There is an old saying from the famous horse and cattle auctioneer, Eddie Wood: “A Longhorn steer can stop more traffic than a dead man.” Yankee’s horn style is typically referred to as a "handle bar twist." I named the original work of art "Easy Rider" because the horn style reminded me of the image of the motorcycle in the 1960s movie of the same name. © Kathy Winkler. Represented by Rich Wiseman, LLC
